Photo of Craig Gazey
  • Name: Craig Gazey
  • Department: Ambassador
  • Position: Actor

Craig Gazey is the English actor most commonly recognised for his role as Graeme Proctor in Coronation Street. Craig made his first appearance on Coronation Street back in 2008, when he was cellmates with David Platt (Jack P Shepard).

He took to acting early on in his career, after studying Performing Arts at City College Plymouth and graduating from Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in 2005. His role as Graeme saw him become the public’s favourite and won numerous awards including ‘Best Newcomer’ for both Inside Soap Awards and National Television Awards as well as ‘Best Comedy Performance’ by British Soap Awards.

However, Craig announced earlier this year that he would abandon his role as Graeme to return to his passion, theatre. Media Essentials caught up with Craig for a very quick chat at Kendal Calling 2011 .

This is what he had to say:

What are you doing with yourself now that you’ve left Coronation Street?

I’m about to do a play in London, in Trafalgor Studios – a West End show.

Are you missing your time away from Coronation Street?

No, well I’ve only been gone for a few months, but I missed theatre. That is my life passion. It’s what I started in so, I want to go back to my roots.

We’re at Kendal Calling, how are you finding it?

Well this is my second year, I came last year, but it’s really festive. It’s really good, so I do enjoy it!

Who are you looking at seeing this year?

I’m looking forward to The Cribs tonight, then definitely Blondie tomorrow. However, last year because of other things, I missed a guy called Micky P Kerr, who does a song ‘I’m not arrogant, I’m just genuinely better than anyone else’. I just like going to all the little tents and finding new bands that never knew existed.

Craig was seen enjoying himself all weekend and spotted several times around the festival, with Coronation Street fans all stopping him for photographs, but one thing remains certain –we look forward to seeing him perform West End once again.
