Children's HospitalThe Five Stars Appeal is raising £1million to buy a new MRI scanner for The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in Manchester.

During the Summer of 2009 both the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital and Booth Hall Children’s Hospital closed and all patients transferred over to the new children’s hospital situated in the City Centre.  The hospital has been granted the royal seal and is now known as The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.  These are exciting times as Manchester has waited a long time for this new hospital and our MRI scanner will be a part of it.

Here are quotes from two of the doctors who will benefit from the new scanner:

Dr Brennan Wilson, Consultant Radiologist, “When the charity purchased the present MRI scanner it made a big difference to lots of services, for example neurosurgery.  Now, because of the advancement of technology the latest scanners have a much stronger magnet (approx 3 x stronger) therefore aiding very early detection of various types of disease.  If you think about it any company in today’s society would not keep using their old computer systems, they would update them to remain efficient; it is the same for the hospital.”

Dr Eddie Estlin, Consultant Oncologist, “The new MRI scanner will help us to perform the type of investigation that is needed to measure how new treatments can work for children with brain tumours.  The scanner will produce images giving better detail of tumours which helps with surgery.”

The new scanner offers many advantages when working with sick children.  It is more efficient and produces better results but many of its features make it ideally suited to diagnosing young people.

At a very basic level the new machine provides a bigger area for the patient, so it helps overcome feelings of claustrophobia.  This ease of use is enhanced by the fact that patients access the machine feet first, so the procedure is less daunting. The fact that the MRI scanner is faster also helps.  Little people, even poorly ones, tend to be wrigglers and the longer they are lying down, the more they move.

Having a faster scanning time reduces this problem, improves results and avoids time consuming repeat procedures.  The MRI scanner will also be considerably quieter than its predecessor which also makes it less daunting for children.

You can help us complete our target and ensure that the children of the North West and beyond have the most up-to-date scanning service. A service fit for a new hospital.
